Plan an open-source project roadmap
The roadmap, who maintains which area, what was decided and who deserves credit. The things that don’t fit in issues and pull requests live here, with a notes field only maintainers read.
An example
@ADoor Put plugin API v2 on the roadmap for Q1, owner Kim. Also note that Raj did a great job on the docs rewrite, we should invite him as a maintainer.
ADoor Added 1 entry to Roadmap and 1 to Contributors
What you can ask later
- “What on the roadmap has no owner?”
- “Who are our most active contributors this year?”
- “Which areas does each maintainer cover?”
- “What did we decide about Windows support?”
Who can see what
- Maintainers edit the roadmap and contributor notes.
- Contributors can read the roadmap, without the maintainer-only notes field.
- A GitHub Actions job gets short-lived access to write release entries, with no stored secret.
How it compares with GitHub Projects
GitHub Projects is better for anything tied to issues and pull requests, and it’s where contributors already are. Keep the work there.
The project’s own records belong in ADoor: decisions, maintainer areas and contributor notes, with access per field, and a GitHub Actions job that signs in for minutes instead of using a stored token.
How to start
- Sign in to ADoor, then add it to an assistant like ChatGPT, Claude, Grok or Cursor through MCP.
- Tell it: “Keep our project roadmap and contributors: Roadmap (item, owner, target, status), Maintainers (name, area) and Contributors (name, contributions, notes).”
- Invite the maintainers, and set up the GitHub Actions sign-in for release entries.
Questions people ask
Can the roadmap be public?
Access goes to the people you invite. To publish it, ask your assistant to write the roadmap out as Markdown for your repo or site.
Can CI write to it?
Yes. GitHub Actions signs in with short-lived access, 15 minutes by default.
What does ADoor cost?
It’s free for up to 3 tables and 100 rows. Pro is $10 a month per workspace, with 1 GB of storage and no per-GB charges.
What happens if I remove someone’s access?
Their next request is refused. What they already saved stays, and the history shows who made each change.
