ADoor vs Obsidian

Obsidian is a note app that keeps your notes as Markdown files on your own device, with optional Sync and Publish. ADoor, your data account, keeps records, such as appointments, contacts or anything you track, that you and assistants like ChatGPT read and change from any device.

Where ADoor stands out

A hosted MCP server

Obsidian offers an official command-line interface that agents can call while the desktop app is running. ADoor's MCP server is hosted, so ChatGPT on your phone can update a list while your laptop is closed.

Share one list, or one field

Obsidian Sync shares whole vaults. In ADoor you share one list, or a list without one field.

History of each change

Obsidian Sync keeps version history for 1 month on Standard and 12 months on Plus. ADoor keeps a history of changes, with who made each one and the before and after.

The products

Obsidian

Obsidian is a free note app for local Markdown files, with paid Sync and Publish.

Assistants
An official CLI; the desktop app must be running
Change history
Sync version history: 1 month Standard, 12 months Plus
Plans
Free app. Sync is $4 per user a month billed yearly.

ADoor

ADoor is your data account. You keep lists and tables in a workspace you own, personal or team: a reading list, an incident log, a list of customers. Describe what you want to keep track of and it's set up for you, with real Postgres underneath. Every person, app, assistant, device and job gets its own access.

Assistants
ChatGPT, Claude, Grok and Cursor connect through MCP with a sign-in.
Apps and scripts
An HTTP API with keys, running the same actions assistants use
Access
Per space, list or field, or just the entries where a field equals a value you choose. Reading, adding, editing and deleting entries, and changing a list's fields, are separate permissions. An assistant never gets more than the person who connected it.
Approvals
Agents ask for more access and you approve or deny. A new device signs in only after you approve it and choose its access.
CI jobs
GitHub Actions signs in with short-lived access, 15 minutes by default and up to 30 days, with no stored secret.
Revoking
Takes effect on the next request. What was already saved stays.
History
A history of changes, with who made each one and the before and after
Underneath
Standard Postgres
Plans
Free for 3 tables and 100 rows. Pro is $10 a month per workspace, with 1 GB of storage.

Which one should you use?

Use Obsidian when

you're writing and linking notes and want them as plain files you own.

  • Your files. Notes are Markdown on your device. ADoor is hosted.
  • Writing and linking. Obsidian is built for notes and links between them.
  • Offline. Notes are files on disk, so they work without a connection.

Use ADoor when

some of what's in your notes is really a list of records that assistants and other people should update.

Technical

  • A script adds each conference talk you attend to an add-only list, and you query it later in SQL.
  • A Cursor agent reads your Projects list and adds entries, but can't delete them.

Personal

  • The people you keep in touch with: when you last spoke and their kids' names. You ask ChatGPT who you haven't called in a while.
  • Films to watch and who recommended each. Friends add to it; only you mark them watched.

Team

  • A research group shares a Papers list where everyone adds and the lead edits status.
  • New laptops sign in only after you approve them.

Business

  • A consultancy's knowledge of clients lives in one list, and each consultant edits only the clients with their name.
  • A freelancer's access ends when you revoke it, and their entries stay.
